Step By Step: Kirk launches book on life with autism
Kinglake’s own local legend Kirk Mercuri is once again proving that the way he sees the world is one of his greatest strengths.
The passionate volunteer has just released his first book, Step By Step: Living with Autism, — an honest, insightful look at life on the autism spectrum, the challenges he works through, and the simple joys that give him purpose.
It’s yet another achievement for the 24-year-old and a powerful reminder that disability should never stand in the way of pursuing your goals.
As part of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), Intereach is celebrating Kirk and the contributions people with disability make to their communities every day.
“Everyone deserves the chance to strive to achieve the very best that their ability allows,” Kirk said.

“People do better when they are accepted, supported, and encouraged.”
Kirk’s five-year writing journey culminated in a community book launch on Sunday 30 November, which was a fitting tribute to the town that has supported him from the start.
Dozens of Kinglake residents turned out to cheer him on, including local author and publisher Kath Stewart.
“I was a little bit nervous but also super excited,” Kirk said.
“I’m really happy with how the book turned out. It gives people the chance to learn more about me, who I am, and what life is like living with autism.”

What started as a personal project during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into an 80-page story of resilience, reflection and hope.
The book offers a rare window into Kirk’s world, blending raw thoughts, observations and emotions with photos of the moments that have shaped him.
Of the 400 printed copies, more than 300 have been sold — many to local Rotary, football and basketball clubs who have benefitted from Kirk’s generosity over the years.
Kirk’s warm presence and passion for helping others can be seen everywhere as he regularly volunteers at basketball and football games, the Kinglake Ranges Opportunity Shop, the library, BMX group, and Neighbourhood House.
That generosity of spirit earned him the title of Murrindindi Shire Council’s Joint Young Citizen of the Year in 2023.
Kirk hopes Step By Step helps people better understand autism and the many ways neurodivergent people experience the world.
His journey hasn’t always been easy. Diagnosed with autism at age two, Kirk’s early years included many challenges. But with strong advocacy from his mother, Maryanne, and the right supports in place, he grew up with the opportunity to thrive.
After accessing the NDIS in 2019 and later connecting with Intereach, Kirk was linked with skill-building programs, local supports and a support worker. His NDIS funding enables him to participate in community, social and recreational activities, develop new skills and work with allied health professionals and receive support that helps him stay active, independent and deeply connected to the community he loves.
And now that community gets to share in his story — one page at a time.
Copies of Step By Step: Living with Autism are available for $15 at Murrindindi Shire Council library, Kinglake Rotary Club and Kinglake Community FoodWorks.
