A partnership to help kids at Christmas

Christmas is being made brighter for children in the Goulburn Valley, thanks to a partnership that is providing them with wonderful, hand-crafted toys.

The two organisations working together are Intereach and the Goulburn Valley Woodworkers, after a community need was identified.

It all started when the Intereach Community Links staff – who have the role of ‘linking’ people with the right services for their individual needs – realised there was a demand for toys that could be donated to families experiencing hardship.

After discussing ways they could help out, a phone call was made to the GV Woodworkers, who agreed to assist.

They have made and provided a range of wooden toys which will now brighten up Christmas for local kids.

Community Links program manager Ashley Lythgo said there are numerous vulnerable families in the Goulburn Valley who need support.

“Experiencing hardship is always difficult, but this is especially so at Christmas time. It was important that we could help provide these toys to ensure we don’t have children missing out at this time of year.”

The GV Woodworkers had no hesitation coming on board to support the program.

President Bob Beecroft said when they were approached by Intereach the decision to provide toys was an easy one.

“Each year we make toys that are donated to local charities at Christmas. Intereach had families in need, so we were happy to provide some toys that we hope will make Christmas brighter for local youngsters.”

GV Woodworkers has more than 130 members who have workshops four times a week at their premises in Packham St, Shepparton. They welcome new members and invite anyone interested to phone 0481 856 407 for more information, or visit www.gvwoodworkers.com.au
