ROAR brings holiday fun to regional youth
Improved wellbeing, confidence and social connection were just some of the outcomes when country kids were immersed in city experiences during a recent school holiday program.
Thanks to funding from the NSW Government’s Summer 2025/26 Holiday Break Program, Intereach’s Reach Out and Relax (ROAR) team took about 20 young people, aged 12-19, from Cootamundra to Wagga Wagga in late January for a day of free fun and adventure.
The action-packed day included rock climbing, high ropes, bumper cars and obstacle courses, followed by ten pin bowling, arcade games and pizza.
ROAR worker Geoff Dewar said the experience highlighted the importance of accessible holiday programs for young people living in rural and regional communities.
“Seeing young people support each other, laugh and step outside their comfort zones was incredible,” Geoff said.
“They approached every activity with a can-do attitude and created friendships that will last well beyond the school holidays.”
The trip received overwhelmingly positive feedback from young people and their families, highlighting the value of creating safe, fun, and supportive experiences for local youth.
A group of Cootamundra girls shared:
“The highlight was definitely visiting Vortex! The VR and the spinning Meltdown rides were great, as was the high ropes course — and the popcorn!”
Another young person said: “The best part of the day was bowling a strike!”
Parents and carers reported an immediate and lasting impact.
While extreme heat forced the cancellation of the planned Gundagai trip, participant safety remained the top priority and the ROAR team hopes to deliver a make-up trip in the future.
“I sincerely thank all attendees and commend them on their behaviour, enthusiasm, and for just being awesome humans,” Geoff said.
“The ROAR staff had such a great time. It is an absolute privilege to meet and spoil local youth for a day.”
Intereach also acknowledged the contribution of Goodes Coaches, Vortex Entertainment, and Wagga Bowling and Entertainment Centre, whose support helped ensure a safe, inclusive and memorable experience.
By removing cost and access barriers, the ROAR school holiday program continues to create opportunities for regional NSW youth to connect, socialise, learn new skills, and have fun during the school holidays.
