Intereach supports Myanmar youth to lead Mildura festival
Intereach will host a new youth-led community event – bringing sport, culture and connection to the Mildura community.
Sepak in Sunraysia is a free event on Saturday 5 September designed by local multicultural youth connected to Intereach’s Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) program.
Supported by the Victorian Government, the event will provide an inclusive and welcoming space where young people can come together through sport, culture and hands-on activities in a welcoming and accessible space.
Intereach SETS Program Manager Cass Hunt said the idea came directly from young people from Mildura’s Myanmar community.
“They approached the SETS team wanting to share their culture with the wider community and introduce people to Sepak Takraw, a fast-paced sport that combines elements of volleyball and soccer, where players use their feet, knees, chest and head to keep the ball in play over a net,” she said.

“Sepak in Sunraysia is entirely driven by the ideas, strengths and leadership of local young people.”
The event will feature come-and-try Sepak Takraw sessions and casual volleyball activities, led by the Mildura Chin Community group. All equipment will be supplied, making the event free and accessible regardless of age, ability or experience.
“This event is a great example of what can happen when young people are supported and given the opportunity to lead,” Ms Hunt said.
“They came to us wanting to share something meaningful from their culture while creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect, and that’s exactly what this event will deliver.”
The young people are leading the event planning and delivery, supported by Intereach and local partners including Mallee Sports Assembly and Sunraysia Volleyball.
“The project creates opportunities for connection between Myanmar’s young people and Mildura’s broader sporting community, while celebrating cultural identity and creating pathways for leadership,” Ms Hunt said.
“We know that strong connected communities are built when people feel seen, heard and valued.
“Sepak in Sunraysia celebrates the rich cultural diversity of our region while creating genuine opportunities for connection through sport, culture and shared experiences.”
The family-friendly event will be held from 10am to 2pm at the Chaffey Secondary College gymnasium. Pizza and fruit will be provided, and parents and carers are encouraged to join in.
