Hot Wheelies back for round two in Mildura
Intereach is bringing back Hot Wheelies to Mildura for a second season.
It comes after the inaugural season launched in August last year, giving people of all abilities another chance to get involved in the region’s first inclusive wheelchair basketball program.
The free, six-week all-abilities program will run every Sunday from 15 February to 22 March 2026 at Hothouse Stadium.
Hot Wheelies gives participants the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of wheelchair basketball before jumping into match play.
Intereach Project Lead and Local Area Coordinator Program Manager Rebekah Clifford said the success of the first season made it clear the program needed to return.
“The response to Hot Wheelies last year was incredible. We saw people of all ages and abilities coming together, trying something new, building confidence and forming real connections,” Ms Clifford said.
Ms Clifford said Hot Wheelies delivered benefits well beyond the basketball court.
“Hot Wheelies is about more than sport. It’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, included and valued — whether they’re living with disability, supporting someone who is, or simply keen to give wheelchair basketball a go,” she said.
“Programs like this help break down barriers, change perceptions and strengthen community connections.”
The program is open to all ages and abilities, with no requirement to attend every session.
“You can come along for just one session, learn new skills, meet new people and leave feeling like you belong to something,” Ms Clifford said.
Co-designed with people who have lived experience of disability, Hot Wheelies focuses on confidence, accessibility and community connection. Participants will have access to sports wheelchairs, basketballs and free transport for registered participants, volunteers and supporters.
The program is inclusive of people from all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and culturally diverse communities, and welcomes able-bodied players.
Hot Wheelies is delivered by Intereach thanks to a Sport and Recreation Victoria Regional All Abilities Participation Grant, in partnership with Mildura Basketball Association, Mildura Rural City Council, Disability Inclusion Advisory Committee, Basketball Victoria, Mallee Sports Assembly, Lime Therapy, Country Care, WeKare and Sunraysia Residential Services.
