Looking for a way to connect with your community?

It’s easy to do when you start with kindness!

Tuesday 17 February is Random Acts of Kindness Day – a day to be kind to yourself, to your loved ones, and people you may never meet.

It’s easy, and it makes you feel good, too!

Every day at Intereach, we see kindness and community working hand in hand. Kindness helps us all to feel more connected with the people around us. Here are some ideas to try:

Be kind to yourself
Take a moment just for you. Breathe deeply and slowly. Notice the sights and sounds around you. Relax your shoulders. Think about something that makes you feel happy. Perhaps it’s a person, or a place. Maybe it’s a memory of a special dayEnjoy the moment before you start to look around for opportunities to share acts of kindness in your community.

Be kind to a family member or friend

Keep an eye out for opportunities to help the people closest to you. Bake a tasty treat for your workmates. Say hello to the postieInvite your elderly neighbour to dinner. Curate an uplifting playlist for someone who loves music. Call someone from your contact list that you haven’t spoken to in a while. Offer to help a friend with a household task they’ve been putting off. Plan an outing. Shout someone lunch.

Make it meaningful and achievable
Donate ta thrift shop and help a family you may never know to find the things they need. Pay it forward at your local cafe and support someone in need to enjoy the simple pleasure of a tea or coffee. Install a street library in front of your house and share the gift of good books with people passing by. Write an uplifting message in chalk on a footpath and boost someone’s mood in the moment.

Intereach Co-CEO Yvette Buhagiar said kindness was an easy and effective way to help people feel more connected in their community.

“Those small, random acts of kindness help to boost your own sense of wellbeing and positivity,” Mrs Buhagiar said.

“Acts of kindness can reduce your stress levels and help you to feel more attuned to the people around you.

“When kindness is seen and experienced every day, we create a community where trust and connection are strong. So even when things get off track, we know that the people around us will be there to lift us up and set us on our feet again.

“That’s what kindness and community are all about.”
