Intereach is empowering Rochester residents with the knowledge and tools they need to prepare for emergencies.

The organisation, in partnership with Campaspe Shire Council, will deliver free, one-on-one emergency preparedness training tailored for vulnerable residents, including people with disability, older people, and other at-risk individuals.

These sessions will be held at the Flood Recovery Hub, 48 Mackay Street, Rochester, from November 25 to 27.

Intereach Senior Child, Family and Community Worker Amber Murphy said the person-centred sessions would cater to each participant’s needs and provide them with essential knowledge and tools to confidently respond to emergencies, fostering a safer and more resilient community.

By educating people to be prepared, we’re fostering a sense of safety, connection, and self-sufficiency that will support their wellbeing both before and after a disaster, while minimising the risk of injury,” Amber said.

“We want the community to feel supported and secure, knowing they have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to handle emergencies.

“Our hope is that participants will leave feeling more prepared, more connected, and more empowered to manage and respond calmly to potential emergencies.”

Participants will have access to a 40-minute one-on-one session, during which they will develop a personalised plan, gain hands-on knowledge, learn techniques to remain calm and safe in the face of an emergency, and receive a starter emergency kit valued at $25, which includes essential items that can be customised to suit personal needs.

Intereach Co-CEO Michelle Tai said people with disability and older people in rural communities often faced barriers to accessing emergency training.

“We want to break down these barriers by bringing this vital training directly to those who need it most,” she said.

“This initiative also aims to strengthen community ties by building a resilient and connected community, ready to face future challenges together.”

Campaspe Shire Council Director Communities Jo Bradshaw said council was proud to support Intereach in this initiative.

“Empowering our vulnerable residents with emergency preparedness skills is a crucial step towards building a resilient community,” Jo said.

“By working in collaboration with Intereach to deliver tailored training and resources, we are ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the knowledge and tools to stay safe during emergencies.”
