Volunteers needed to keep engines revving

Every day in Corowa a delivery is made that has an immediate impact on community members, creates conversation and forges friendships.

And now, not-for-profit community service Intereach is offering an opportunity for people to get involved with Meals on Wheels as a volunteer.

As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer, you will belong to a team committed to helping stay-at-home seniors maintain their health and independence with nutritious food, personal contact, and caring service.

Intereach co-CEO Michelle Tai said the volunteer program was a wonderful way of meeting new people and supporting the community.

“The call for volunteers has never been more important as more and more older people look to stay in the comfort and security of their own homes,” Ms Tai said.

“By becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer, you will be joining a wonderful team in Corowa supporting a critical service.

“While there are some checks and balances that need to take place in first joining any Intereach Volunteers group, once that is done, you will find an organisation that is supportive, provides training, and most of all has a wonderful appreciation of the time and effort given by its volunteers.

Corowa Meals on Wheels volunteers, husband and wife team of Peter and Jan, have been delivering meals to the Corowa community for around 20 years.

“It has been a labour of love for us,” Peter said.

“We’re not just dropping off meals to these people, we are checking in, seeing what they are up to and making friends. Being a volunteer gives us both a sense of fulfilment and reminds us about the impact we can make in someone’s life.”

In Corowa, MOW is delivered Monday to Friday. Drivers arrive at Painters Cafe – Guy Street at 11.30am and with rounds taking between one to two hours.
