Preventing falls to live your best life
Slips, trips, and falls can have a significant impact on an older person. An injury can determine if a person stays in their own home or moves to another form of care.
Awareness, prevention, and appropriate supports are key to ensuring older Australians can remain safely in their own home for as long as possible.
For Intereach Clinical Care Partner Emma Sanderson, that involves advising staff and participants on ways to identify and reduce the risk of falls, navigate mobility changes, access support, and provide the highest standard of care.
“Falls prevention is a top priority for Intereach,” Emma said.
“We know that a fall can have life-changing consequences for an older person. Recovery times can be longer, and injuries can impact not just mobility, but mental health, daily routines, and independence.
“That’s why falls prevention is so important to us. We want our participants to be living their best lives.
“Before we begin delivering services, our Care Partners and Community Support Workers complete an assessment of the participant’s home to ensure it is safe for both participants and staff.
“Our support workers check in on participants regularly. If a participant lets them know that they have experienced a fall at any time since their last visit, we have protocols in place to ensure the participant accesses appropriate medical care.
“Our staff prioritise the wellbeing of participants.
“If they observe an issue that might increase the risk of a fall, we can support participants to engage an occupational therapist or physiotherapist to review the participant and make sure they have all necessary mitigations and supports in place.
“If a person’s mobility changes, we can request a review of the services through My Aged Care.
“And, if a participant is hospitalised, we liaise with hospital staff to make sure all necessary assessments are completed, understand any changes to the participant’s mobility baseline, and ensure equipment and supports are in place when the participants returns home.
“Intereach is there to support participants every step of the way,” Emma said.
Staying active is one of the most effective ways older Australians can reduce their risk of a fall.
“Social outings and physical activity can make a big difference when it comes to maintaining fitness and reducing the risk of falls,” Emma said.
“Intereach provides strength and balance classes in Echuca, Gunbower, and Lockington that support participants to maintain or improve their fitness and get the most from life.”
