The People Behind Aged Care: Home is where Hayley loves

For Intereach aged care worker Hayley, home is more than a place. It’s where life’s most meaningful moments live.

As a Community Support Worker, she steps into her clients’ homes knowing she’s walking into a lifetime of memories, routines, and personal stories. And for her, that’s exactly what makes the work so special.

“I love building meaningful relationships with my clients,” Hayley said.

“It means a lot when they trust me to support them in their own space, where they feel comfortable.”

It can be as simple as helping around the home before sitting down for a chat. Hayley understands that even small acts of support can have a lasting impact on someone’s wellbeing, confidence, and sense of independence.

One of Hayley’s proudest moments isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing less. During weekly grocery trips with clients, she’s intentional about stepping back. Rather than taking over, she walks alongside them, offering help only when it’s needed.

“It’s about supporting, not replacing. They’re still in control. I’m just there to assist.”

It’s a simple approach, but a powerful one. By respecting each person’s ability to make choices and stay active in their day-to-day life, Hayley helps her clients remain connected to their community and maintain their independence.

Building trust doesn’t happen overnight, and Hayley knows it takes consistency, patience, and genuine care.

She makes sure to listen, to understand what matters most to each client, from their routines to their personal preferences. It’s this attention to detail that helps her create a sense of safety and reassurance.

Even when clients meet her for the first time, Hayley prioritises connection.

“I always introduce myself and ask questions about how they like things done,” she says.
“Everyone is different, and it’s important they feel heard and respected from the start.”

To Hayley, compassionate care is about more than completing tasks. It’s about preserving dignity. It’s taking the time to be empathetic, respecting privacy, and honouring each person’s background and choices.

And for families considering aged care support, Hayley wants them to know one thing above all else – this work comes from the heart.

“We genuinely care. We do this because we love helping people,” she says.

“We’re there every step of the way, to support clients to live safely, independently, and with dignity.”

Hayley is one of our many aged care workers supporting older people to live the life they choose.
