The People Behind Aged Care: Mon knows the drill

When Intereach aged care worker Mon walks into the home of her client John, his face lights up.

Of course, she knows better than most that earning John’s approval isn’t always easy.

At 82, John likes things done a certain way. He’s proud of his home, values his routines and isn’t shy about saying how he likes things done. Fortunately, Mon wouldn’t have it any other way.

There is plenty of cheeky banter between the pair, the kind that only comes with a relationship built on trust, respect and a few cups of tea along the way.

“Mon’s everything I want,” John said.

“Every time I tell her to do something, she does more. She doesn’t do less. She goes over and above.”

It’s the kind of feedback that reflects what makes Intereach different: our people.

For Mon, a Community Support Worker in Swan Hill, aged care is about much more than a clean house or a completed to-do list.

It’s about building genuine relationships, understanding what matters to each person and helping them continue living independently in the place they call home.

“I love working with my clients and being able to build a really good rapport with them,” she said.

“If I can make life a little easier for someone, that’s what I love about the job.”

When supporting John, Mon helps with cleaning and physically demanding household tasks that have become harder with age. But knowing how John likes things done is just as important as doing them.

And if a job’s worth doing, as John might say, it’s worth doing properly.

The practical support is important, but the friendship they’ve built means just as much.

The first day Mon came, I said, ‘I’m having a coffee, you have one too, and we’ll have a chat’,” John said.

Since then, those chats have become a regular part of Mon’s visits.

“Sometimes I may not have spoken to anyone in a while and after chatting with Mon, I feel better,” he said.

For Mon, those connections are what make the role so rewarding.

“It’s not really a job for me. It feels more like helping family,” she said.
