Intereach volunteers enhancing lives

Intereach is celebrating its volunteers who continue to build meaningful connections, break down social isolation and reduce loneliness every day across regional Victoria and NSW.

From driving older people to appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels, to supporting aged care social groups and simply sharing a cuppa and conversation with someone, Intereach volunteers are helping people to stay connected while providing reassurance to their families.

One of those volunteers is James, who supports Helen through Intereach’s aged care program.

Whether it’s taking Helen down the street to pay bills or visit the bank, heading out for something to eat and drink, taking her to visit her husband while he was in care or spending time sitting and chatting together, James provides companionship and practical support that makes a real difference.

“James is happy to do whatever I need. He is just marvellous, and I greatly enjoy his company,” Helen said.

“James is a beautiful person and has had such a positive impact on my life.”

For James, volunteering is equally rewarding.

“Volunteering gives me the chance to reconnect with the community, show people my skills, learn new skills and help people with things they are unable to,” he said.

“By volunteering, you get to know yourself and your community. It gives you a good sense of achievement.”

Intereach is thanking its 50-plus volunteers as part of this week’s National Volunteer Week and inviting others to get involved aligning with the theme, Your Year to Volunteer.

Intereach Workforce Team Leaders Natasha Hillier and Chris Letcher said volunteers were at the heart of the organisation’s work —bringing kindness, companionship and genuine human connection.

“For many families balancing work, distance and other responsibilities, volunteers and staff provide comfort in knowing someone is helping their loved one stay connected, valued and supported,” Ms Hillier said.

“For many people, especially older members of our community, a volunteer might be the person they look forward to seeing most each week,” Mrs Letcher said.
