Moira Shire to become more inclusive

Moira Shire is more inclusive thanks to a new initiative helping people identify accessible local businesses and spaces.
Intereach has launched the Access At A Glance (AAAG) program throughout Moira Shire, in collaboration with Moira Shire Council and Cobram and District Specialist School.
Access At A Glance is a free, no-obligation program that assesses how businesses meet disability access and inclusion guidelines, while providing practical, easy-to-implement advice to improve accessibility for customers, visitors and staff.
Assessments will be carried out by Intereach’s local area coordination team, with support from senior students at Cobram and District Specialist School, creating valuable learning opportunities while strengthening community connections.
Students are eager to play an active role in the initiative. Mia is “looking forward to being part of this program,” while Rose said, “going to the shops to speak to the owners will be interesting”.
Cooper shared he was “looking forward to meeting new people and helping”, and Imogen said she was “excited to start our activities”.
Intereach Senior Local Area Coordinator Jasmine Boyland said the program was about making inclusion visible and accessible for everyone.
“Access At A Glance helps businesses understand how accessible they really are and how small changes can make a big difference,” Ms Boyland said.
“Being an inclusive business isn’t just about people with disability. It benefits parents with prams, older people, people with temporary injuries and those with hidden disabilities. Ultimately, it creates better experiences for everyone.”
Businesses that take part in the program receive a set of clear, easy-to-recognise stickers to display, showing customers at a glance what accessibility features are available.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Graeme Emonson PSM, who also chairs the Moira All Abilities Advisory Committee, said council was pleased to help promote this initiative.
“Access At A Glance will encourage improved access to local businesses and community spaces, enhancing the lives of those living with different access needs, who reside in or visit Moira Shire,” Dr Emonson said.
“It supports council’s vision of being a welcoming, healthy and sustainable community that encourages diversity, business ingenuity and inclusion.”
Intereach, the NDIS Partner in the Community, welcomes conversations with local businesses interested in taking part.
Businesses interested in a free accessibility assessment can contact the Intereach Shepparton office, 210 Corio St, on 1300 488 226, visit Access At A Glance – Intereach.
