The People Behind Aged Care: Richard – More than a cleaner
When it comes to ageing well at home, it’s often the little things that matter most.
A clean kitchen. A warm conversation. The reassurance that someone is looking out for you.
For Intereach Domestic Assistant Richard, these moments are at the heart of his work — helping older Australians feel supported, respected, and safe in their own homes.
After decades running his own businesses, Richard didn’t expect to find himself working in aged care. But it didn’t take long for him to realise he’d found something meaningful.
“I just took to it with the older people. It’s so satisfying,” he said.
“You walk away knowing you’ve done something to help someone.”
Supporting people in their homes is about more than completing tasks — it’s about building trust.
“The main thing is just to listen to them — really listen and remember what they say,” Richard said.
Each client is different. Some prefer quiet independence, while others value conversation and companionship. Richard takes the time to understand what matters most to each person, finding ways to connect through shared interests, stories, or memories.
“Everyone’s got a story… and many older people appreciate when you take an interest in them,” he said.

Richard knows many older people can feel overlooked or invisible at times, and he sees it as part of his role to make sure they feel respected and heard.
“They didn’t just arrive at that age — they’ve lived a life,” he said.
“You can learn so much from the older generation.”
By taking an interest in his clients’ experiences, Richard helps restore a sense of dignity and connection that can sometimes be lost.
While his role involves practical support, Richard says it’s often the simplest actions that have the greatest impact.
“You think it’s a small task, but to them it’s everything,” he said.
From helping maintain a safe and tidy home to simply having a chat, these moments help clients stay comfortable, confident, and connected.
Richard recalls supporting an older couple in their 90s who were starting to struggle with day-to-day tasks. By recognising the signs and working with his team to arrange extra support, their wellbeing improved significantly.
“When the right supports went in, it was like she was back to herself again,” he said.
For Richard, aged care is about human connection as much as practical support.
“There’s a lot more to it than being
a cleaner. It’s a two-way street —
you help them, but they enrich
your life too.”
