Celebrating the people behind aged care and connection
Thousands of older people across regional Victoria and NSW are able to stay living safely in their own homes thanks to the support of more than 260 Intereach aged care employees.
On Aged Care Employee Day (7 August), Intereach is celebrating the team whose compassion, commitment and care help older Australians stay connected to their communities and maintain the independence they value.
From care coordination and in-home support to community transport and social connection, Intereach staff are often the familiar faces helping older people to live the life they choose.
People like 93-year-old May from Swan Hill, who is able to remain in the home she loves thanks to the regular support of aged care workers like Helen.
With family living elsewhere and everyday tasks becoming more challenging, remaining independent is especially important to May. Helen’s visits provide practical assistance and meaningful companionship.
“Social support means a lot to me. Sometimes I don’t have anyone to speak to,” May said.
“Helen is such a lovely person, and we get along so well. Sometimes we bake together and I teach her things and she teaches me things.”

For Swan Hill client John, “a helping hand around the house” from workers like Mon allows him to focus on what matters most.
“Mon always does more than expected and goes above and beyond. It’s reassuring to know that help is there when I need it,” he said.
For Mon, helping people maintain their independence is what makes the job so rewarding.
“If I can make life a little easier for someone, that’s what I love about the job,” she said.

In Bendigo, Domestic Assistant Richard said his role goes beyond household tasks.
He recalls supporting a couple in their 90s who were beginning to struggle with daily living.
By recognising the signs early and working with colleagues to arrange additional support, he saw their quality of life improve dramatically.
“When the right supports went in, it was like she was back to herself again,”
he said.
Stories like these highlight the important role Intereach’s Care Partners play in helping clients and families navigate the aged care system and access the services they need.
Intereach Co-CEO Yvette Buhagiar said Aged Care Employee Day was an opportunity to recognise the people making a profound difference in the lives of older Australians every day.
“Their impact extends far beyond the services they deliver. Whether they’re providing direct support, coordinating services, driving clients to appointments or helping families navigate the aged care system,” she said.
“They build trusted relationships, reduce social isolation and help people remain connected to the communities they love.”
Intereach will host celebrations across its service region on 7 August as part of Aged Care Employee Day.
