What is the Commonwealth Home Support Programme?

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an entry-level home support program that helps older people to live independently in their homes and communities. It also provides respite services to give carers a break.

The program aims to:

  • Help people live as independently as possible;
  • Focus on working with them, rather than doing things for them; and
  • Give a small amount of help to a large number of people.

Most people in the CHSP only need 1 or 2 services to help them to stay living independently.

If you’re an older Australian who wants to access government-funded help at home, you need to apply for an assessment on the My Aged Care website, call the  My Aged Care contact centre or call Intereach on 1300 488 226 and talk to someone from the Aged Care Services team.

The CHSP can provide services such as:
  • Help around the house
  • Transport
  • Meals
  • Personal care
  • Home modifications
  • Social support
  • Nursing and allied health
  • Planned respite care

Intereach will work with you to develop a care plan based on your support needs and provide support to keep you safely doing things where you are able to. Staff will review your support services every 12 months to make sure they are meeting needs and will ensure quality standards are met.

What does it cost?

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme is partially subsidised through Australian Government funding grant agreements, however, clients are expected to contribute towards the cost of the services they receive if they can afford to do so. Clients will not be asked to cover the full cost of services. You can request a Support To Live At Home Fee Schedule by contacting the Aged Care Services team.

Clients will not be denied services if they are unable to contribute to the cost of the services. Intereach has its own arrangements for protecting those least able to contribute towards the cost of their care.

Where is it available?

Intereach delivers the Commonwealth Home Support Programme across the Riverina-Murray region of NSW and the Campaspe Shire in Victoria.
